BROKEN SATELLITE

she feels like home from this long and windy road

staring at her photograph like it’s a silent picture show

she’s the only love I’ve known but like a shipwreck in a storm

my heart is underwater now sinking like a stone

most days go by floating through the atmosphere, a broken satellite

…all alone in time so far away, can you hear me now, is the signal down

she feels like home when the days are dark and cold

retracing every paragraph from love letters that she wrote

she’s the one who knew me most but like an imprint on my soul

i’m reliving every memory with an ever-present ghost

most days go by floating through the atmosphere, a broken satellite

…all alone in time so far away, can you hear me now, is the signal down

RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT ME

drunk from your smile in the place where you left me

waving goodbye from the wrong side of fate

i scribbled a few lines and studied them closely

and littered my mind with crumpled mistakes

oh...i’m right where you left me, oh...just in case you walk by

oh...my heart’s full of envy, oh…should you change your sweet mind

i rushed outta bed in a fireman’s hurry

time had been waiting ten minutes that day

i slipped into something a little less worried

and made my way down to day dreams cafe

oh...i’m right where you left me, oh...just in case you walk by

oh...my heart’s full of envy, oh…should you change your sweet mind

well, i ended my day feeling low down and empty

the sky took a bow behind curtain drawn shades

i dove in untied to wrestle what haunts me

and emptied my pockets full of wishing well change

oh...i’m right where you left me, oh...just in case you walk by

oh...my heart’s full of envy, oh…should you change your sweet mind

STARTING OVER

she tried her hand at loving him for a while

hid a hotel bar in the car just in case

resentment stripped the furling lines from her smile

she was slow to break

the more she tried, the more she knew she was dying

just a fleeting star in the dark losing shape

with one tall breath she screamed aloud in silence

she was saving face

she believed what he told her

she couldn’t see a way over

then, the sun came out and daylight tapped her shoulder

said, the time was now and it wouldn’t wait much longer at the door

so, she turned the key and slid the deadbolt open

then drove for miles to somewhere she’d start over…starting over

she burned it all down and reveled free in the wild

a weary heart full of scars and honest mistakes

hand over fist she climbed out from the fire

she was raised on faith, she was raised on faith

NORTHERN LIGHTS

i’ve been waiting for this all my life

hoping, praying someday you’d arrive

now, you’re here with me

waves of emerald green are rushing over me

oh...woeful night, go easy

stars are slow to flicker

bitter cold northern lights hold my eyes

beneath this hollow sliver of gold

i’ve been saving all these words inside

for this moment to catch me by surprise

lean in close, you won’t regret it

waves of emerald green are rushing over me

oh...woeful night, go easy

stars are slow to flicker

bitter cold northern lights hold my eyes

beneath this hollow sliver of gold

HER STARLIGHT

combing the sea for lovers

wide-eyed and gainfully still

them ivory moon beams lay haunted

til her starlight lured me in

oh…oh…oh…oh…

oh…oh…

the lavender breeze fell on us

like two lips in need of a kiss

the tongue in her cheek rode shotgun

as silence stood pleading the fifth

oh…oh…oh…oh…

oh…oh…

we watered the seeds with honey

like gardeners in need of a fix

we tired them sheep from counting

and spent cold summer days sleeping in

oh…oh…oh…oh…

oh…oh…

STEADY AS WE GO

steady as we go child, dreamers hold the pen

clever little gold stars are bound to draw you in

wishes in the well remind us of the price we paid

hopeless is a fool’s heart believing love was meant to stay

when these bones are laid to rest

and them diggers bear witness

and the preacher drains his breath

you better believe i’m leaving with no regrets

a circus in the graveyard, the sky is turning heads

lilies working so hard growing reverence for the dead

ringing from the bell reminds us when it’s time to pray

we’re slow to figure out grieving is just love changing shape

when these bones are laid to rest

and them diggers bear witness

and the preacher drains his breath

you better believe i’m leaving with no regrets

we rise and we shine and we silence the noise in our heads

silver linings lay hiding behind things that don’t make much sense…

until it makes sense

when these bones are laid to rest

and them diggers bear witness

and the preacher drains his breath

you better believe i’m leaving with no regrets

WHEN WE WERE YOUNG

it was easier back then, the days when we were young and the simple things were enough

all the kids would play 'til our mothers called our name, riding bikes and streetball games

it was easier back then

there’s a life inside these photographs

there were times we tried that we can’t get back

there’s a reason why it wasn’t meant to last

oh…we weren’t meant to last

it was easier back then before work and growing up and everything became too much

summers at the lake, camping fires and rope swings, climbing trees and lemonade

it was easier back then

there’s a life inside these photographs

there were times we tried that we can’t get back

there’s a reason why it wasn’t meant to last

oh…we weren’t meant to last

THIS HEART

this heart of pins ’n’ holes without you near me is beating slow

this bed of springs ’n’ foam without you near me is hard and cold

i've traveled so far on this road turning each stone as i go

there’s too many pieces to hold

i will run ’til my feet go numb

i will climb the highest rung

i won’t rest ’til the day is done

and you are near me…

this house of sticks ’n’ stone without you near me is not a home

this field of seed ’n' rows without you near me is overgrown

i've traveled so far on this road turning each stone as i go

there’s too many pieces to hold

i will run ’til my feet go numb

i will climb the highest rung

i won’t rest ’til the day is done

and you are near me...and you are near me
